Vivienne Wears Many Masks
Happy Thursday! I meant to post yesterday and the day escaped from me. Sometimes that happens, but I'm back! Today I wanted to talk a bit about what self-care isn't. Proper self-care is taking care of yourself, mentally and physically. The opposite of that is staying inside all day, not showering, forgetting to eat, not drinking enough water, not sleeping enough or sleeping too much. Sometimes it's avoiding your friends and isolating yourself, or eating too much.
Another big thing that's important to not do when you're trying to take care of yourself is to be authentic. It's really easy when you're depressed to pretend you're okay, to pretend nothing's wrong. It's hard to be genuine. When you're vulnerable with people, sometimes they don't return that vulnerability, sometimes you get hurt instead. But when you're vulnerable with people who truly care, you'll find that you receive kindness, love, and validation instead of blame, scorn, and being treated as a joke or a lie. It's really freaking hard. But it's worth it.
Masking your feelings and pretending you're ok does make sense, though. It's a way to protect yourself from those who aren't going to hurt you when you're real. But it comes at a cost. The more you bottle up, the bigger it's going to blow up eventually.
People also mask their feelings because of the stigma. People want to pretend that mental illnesses dont exist because then, they might have to care about it. It's uncomfortable. So it's easier to not think about it. Obviously, we need to start talking about this more to change that, which is what I'm doing. <3
